How CardPilot Works

Last updated: May 2026

CardPilot compares credit cards by estimating how each card would perform against spending and preferences you enter. It is a calculator and education tool, not a lender or adviser.

Step 1: Enter approximate spending

The tool asks for monthly spending across categories such as dining, groceries, gas, travel, flights, hotels, rent, Amazon, Costco, streaming, drugstores, transit, and other purchases. You can leave categories blank when they do not apply.

Approximate numbers are usually enough for comparison. If your spending changes seasonally, use an average month or run the calculator more than once with different scenarios.

Step 2: Set reward preferences

Preferences such as cash back versus travel rewards, annual fee tolerance, rotating category willingness, Amazon Prime, Costco shopping, and preferred airlines or hotels can affect the ranking. These inputs help the model estimate fit but do not determine eligibility or approval.

Point valuations are adjustable because users redeem points differently. Travel points can be valuable for flexible travelers, while cash back is simpler and more predictable.

Step 3: Compare estimated net annual value

CardPilot estimates annual rewards, expected credits, annual fees, and complexity penalties. The main output is estimated net annual value, which helps compare a no-fee cash back card against a premium travel card on one scale.

Results include single-card estimates and multi-card combinations. They are based on the model's assumptions and should be verified against current issuer terms.

Privacy and limitations

The tool runs in your browser and does not require sensitive identity information. Do not enter SSNs, full card numbers, bank account numbers, or passwords.

CardPilot does not provide financial advice, credit advice, or approval guarantees. It may not include every card or targeted offer on the market.

Frequently asked questions

Does CardPilot store my spending inputs?
The tool is designed to run in your browser and does not require an account or sensitive identity information.
Why does net annual value matter?
It compares estimated rewards and credits after subtracting fees and complexity, which is more useful than headline reward rates alone.
Is CardPilot really free?
Yes. CardPilot is 100% free. There are no accounts, paywalls, or premium tiers. The full calculator and every recommendation is available to everyone.
Does CardPilot affect my credit score?
No. CardPilot only does math on your spending. We never request a credit pull or share your information with issuers. Applying for a card on the issuer's website is a separate action that may affect your score.
Is this financial advice?
No. CardPilot provides educational comparisons and estimates. It is not financial, legal, tax, credit, lending, or banking advice, and it does not guarantee approval. Always verify terms with the issuer before applying.
